The Sojourn Athlete of the Week – Drue Young

The Sojourn Player of the Week, presented by Amplify Media, is junior Drue Young from the IWU Baseball program.

Young comes from Greenwood, IN, and went to Center Grove High School, where he was the team’s starting pitcher.

While they are in a transitional period with a new head coach, Young has been a dominant force on the mound this season. He earned his second Conference Pitcher of the Week, just this season alone.

“We have been really close and tight-knit as a team this year, and even with the coaching change, it is the same team and the same guys,” Young said.

Last year, he was named All-Crossroads League 1st team with 91 strikeouts and two shutouts.

Young currently has one shutout on the season and has his lowest ERA (earned run average) since becoming a Wildcat.

“There was a little bit of a struggle at the beginning of the season,” Young said. “When we lost some games that we should have won, it stings a bit because those teams celebrate that as if they won the World Series.”

The team’s last outing against Mount Vernon University was a 3-0 win, while Young helped lead the way, pitching seven innings and giving up zero runs.

“This year is our chance to go back and prove that we weren’t a Cinderella story like people said we were,” Young said.

The team is sitting with an overall record of 25-9 as the Wildcats look to make another successful run in the World Series in Lewiston, Idaho.

The Wildcats’ next opponent is Taylor University, as they will have back-to-back doubleheaders on April 12th and 13th.
